Youtube Music Awards 2015

There’s this new thing called the YouTube Music Awards show. Youtube has compiled 50 winners from this year and now they’re kindly releasing 13 new music videos for fans to watch. The show has music from the following artists:

Action Bronson ft. Chance the Rapper, Cahoots, Charli XCX, Ed Sheeran & Rudimental, FKA twigs, Kygo ft. Parson James, Lindsey Stirling, Martin Garrix ft. Usher, MAX ft. Hoodie Allen, Migos, Megan Nicole, Nicky Jam & Enrique Iglesias, and Shamir.

If you’re a fan of any of these artists or music videos in general, this is for you. It’s a new type of show to honor the hard work these artists and music producers do for our entertainment. Hopefully this will be a new trend, because it’s pretty cool…

Get the YTMA 2015 Music Video Playlist, subscribe to the Youtube Music Awards channel, and get a look behind the scenes at how the laser-filled launch film for the 2015 YouTube Music Awards was made.

Without further delay, as posted today on Youtube, the 2015 Youtube Music Awards show. Enjoy.

Timeflies at Purdue

OK, so a few things… 1) Timeflies is an American music duo of producer Rob Resnick (Rez) and vocalist Cal Shapiro. 2) The title of this blog is a pun. It’s “punny,” kind of. 3) Today is the first time I listened to some of their songs, and they are GOOD (in my opinion.)

Meet Timeflies: Rob and Cal

Timeflies with Truslow

March 7th

Purdue University, Elliott Hall of Music

8 p.m.

So what type of music does this duo produce? They call it “Electro Hip Hop Dub-Something.” Descriptive, right? But it mostly sums it up nicely. Here’s what they do with their Electro Hip Hop Dub-Something: release new remixes, perform live covers, and freestyle over original beats. They get creative, they have fun, and they sound great. This is just my opinion, so what do you think?

Original music:

Their original music is “music to my ears,” but their freestyles and covers are just as wonderful. Timeflies has a Youtube channel called “Timeflies Tuesday” that is dedicated to covers and freestyles.

(This song is unedited and therefore may be inapropriate for some listeners.)

I think this sums up the personality of the duo so well. You can see they have fun, they’re creative and Cal is impressive in his ability to incorporate these random words into his lyrics.

If you’re as impressed as I am, you should get your tickets soon. Really soon. I hear they’re almost gone. You can get them through Purdue Convocations or Ticketmaster.

Do We Like Covers?

Yes, of course, to keep us warm, but those aren’t the covers I’m talking about.

Cover song, or simply a cover refers to an original song that is sung by the original artist or band that is remade/sang by a different artist or band. It sounds confusing, but it’s really simple.

It’s hard for me to decide if I like covers or not. Some are better than others, of course, but can you beat the original? I think the answer is yes… especially if you don’t like the original artist and the cover is done by an artist you enjoy. I’m sure there are other reasons as well.

Every artist or band has their own style and sound. They can slow a song down or speed it up. They can add more spunk or emotion to a song. Different can be good, but it’s all up to the listener.

Let me show you what I mean with these examples.

The song “Riptide” by Vance Joy….

…is covered by Taylor Swift…

What did you think? Did you like the original? Did you like the cover? What about these two songs? Personally, I enjoyed them both because I like the fast-paced original as well as the slower remake. Do you see how they are different?

The song “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman…

…is covered by Sam Smith

This duo is similar in pace. Do you like one more than the other? Did your decision have something to do with the artists or the song in general? A variety of things can affect our reasoning, but there’s nothing wrong with this. That’s why there is so much music out there for us to explore. Songs, artists, bands, playlists, and concerts for every mood, every feeling, and every emotion you can imagine.

Do we like covers? Sometimes I do. Do YOU like covers?

Apps and MORE apps: Which Music App is for you?

If you’re like me, you can’t leave the house without music, which means my phone (the magical little device that carries all of my music for me). Don’t even get me started on forgetting my earbuds, that’s just asking for a bad day. But I don’t just plug my earbuds into my phone and.. BAM! music. No, no. I have to decide on an app for the day, which can be a struggle.

If you have this struggle also, this post is for you. I would like to introduce you to my app list. Say hello.

(This won’t be in any particular order, you can decide for yourself what you like best. Also, Andriod vs. Apple may prohibit some apps from being used. Beware: the phone brand battle rages on. The first four apps can be free or upgraded, the last app will cost you.)

Pandora: One of my top used apps. Input a song or artist and Pandora compiles a playlist of similar songs and artists. Liking or disliking songs will alter the playlist, as will adding new artists or songs. Minimum commercials are key and unlimited playlists are great for every mood.

Spotify: It lets you create your own playlists or search for pre-made playlists or playlists friends have made. From sharing playlists to sending songs, Spotify is ready for you. As far as I’ve noticed, you have to make your playlists on a computer before you can listen to it on a mobile device.

Songza: Oh Songza, how you have saved me. I must say, the workout playlists offered are wonderful. Songza is the app that lets you pick your current activity, your mood, and gives you about 6 genre options followed by various playlists. Based on your selections, Songza hands you a playlist which you can favorite for later if it’s your style. (I have… “Drop A Beat Workout” is perfect for running at the COREC.)

Music: If you don’t like leaving your music (I understand… radios are the worst sometimes) this app is for you. Guess what! It should already be on your phone. Upload music from a computer, buy it from a music store, or download it from the internet and this is where you can listen to those beautiful songs you selected. It allows you to make playlists, repeat your favorite songs as much as you want, and there are NO COMMERCIALS.

Last, but most certainly not least…

Beats Music: Though I have yet to personally experience this app, a trusted source informs me that it is well worth the price. Why you ask? Have you ever felt like you didn’t know what you wanted to listen to? Say you “feel like you need some positive vibes.” Type a sentence into The Sentence feature and Beats Music listens and responds, making a playlist catering to your sentence. Pretty cool, huh?

If you don’t trust my opinion, like to figure things out on your own, etc. Itunes App Store has a database of Popular Music Apps that you can search through to investigate. The apps listed aren’t specific to Apple products. Be warned, the list is extremely vast. Digital Trends also has a nice list of the Best Music Apps for Your Smartphone that offers more information.

I think I’ll download Beats Music today and give it a try. What music app are you going to be listening to?

And the GRAMMY Award Goes To…

This year was the 57th Annual Grammys Award Show. In case you didn’t hear, artist Sam Smith had a fantastic night. Taking home four awards including, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, and Best Pop Vocal Artist, two of which were for the song, “Stay With Me.”

Although Smith took home the most GRAMMY Awards, he wasn’t the only winner of the night. Eminem took home his sixth Grammy for Best Rap Album. His song “Monster,” featuring Rihanna, from the album “The Marshall Mathers LP2,” sets the record for most awarded and top-selling rapper to date.

The other Grammy winners are equally as impressive as Smith and Eminem, check out this year’s winners.

The Superbowl may be something, but so is that halftime show.

Year after year we crowd together in front of a TV screen to watch the famous Super Bowl showdown between the two top NFL teams of the year. But why do we do it? Is it for the love of the game? The hilarious commercials? The good company? The extravagant halftime performances?

What ever your reasoning is, you’ll most likely enjoy more than just one of those parts that make the whole Super Bowl Sunday experience.

hi-res-d5a9d7aae37365bc523a2a1bd1e67125_crop_northIn honor of Super Bowl Sunday, I bring you the 10 Best Super Bowl Halftime Shows and in case you missed this years show, enjoy a recap of Katy Perry’s performance. Perry’s performance may have been a little more colorful than most, but was still a success with the combined talents of Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott.
